Your son is correct on the cost of food. Years ago when we started going to Vegas, it was very, very cheap to eat. Over the years it has really gone up. There are bargains to be found if you really look for them. But overall, the strip hotels are way too pricey in my opinion. We prefer to eat in the cafes now. We just don't eat enough to make it worth $20 and up per person for a buffet that may or may not be good, hot and fresh.

As for hotels, the Venetian is very nice. You would love it there. We also like Mirage, TI, NYNY and MGM. Since we don't spend much time in our room, we always looked for a good price. Now we mostly stay at MGM/Mirage properties since they give us free rooms. I would stay away from Circus Circus, Stratosphere, Sahara and any downtown hotels. Look for a good central location. For a first trip, everyone should stay on the strip. Go to the hotel websites and sign up. You may get some email offers. Remember, if you book through the hotel, you can usually change or cancel your reservations up to 48 hours before check-in. Through an agency or expedia like site, you are locked in. Rates change constantly in Vegas.

Go and have a great time! So much to see and do, you will never do it all in a dozen trips. That's why we have to go every year.
